Background:
I awoke one morning to find a small fury present huddled on the cold ceramic tiles of my kitchen floor. Upon closer inspection I realised that it was in fact a baby mouse.
Merlin was my long haired, soft, cuddly teddy bear of a cat. Well at least that was true while he was in the house. However upon exiting his cat flap, he became the worlds no.1 torturer, murderer and down right menace to the local countryside rodent and small creature population.
As Merlin finally and I must say very reluctantly released the poor little creature from his vice-like grip, I hurriedly popped the mouse into a box. Ignoring the yowls of the cat, I placed some water and food into the mouse's safe place and put him well out of reach of the rodent basher.
To my surprise the next day my little fluffy patient was bouncing around his box. However it seemed that as a result of his battle with the amber eyed bully he had been left with a dodgy leg.
Due to his war wound he couldn't be released back into the wild for sometime. So the baby mouse and I became friends. Some may say that sculptors have little in the way of social interaction having chosen to spend our lives communicating with mud or stone. However, we could never be accused of a lack of imagination; so if I can't have real colleagues I thought, well I may as well invent them!! Hence George, my new found baby mouse became my assistant. I tried him in a variety of roles, Health and Safety Officer, but I couldn't find a hard hat and safety boots in his size, so we tried IT Specialist, but George couldn't resist nibbling the wires, though he did seem to get on very well with the mouse. We finally decided that he would be best suited to modelling as he could hold a pose for a considerably long time, especially if it was a sleeping pose. So with George's help I made 'Mouse in a Box' and 'Sleeping Dormouse' before he was released fighting fit, and slightly older into a safe, lush field with lots of places to sleep and hide, and well away from Merlin the menace mouse catcher.
