Artist Statement
The pieces in this section are all derived from a deeply personal place.
Each piece calls upon the emotional, spiritual, and physiological planes of the mind and attempts to engulf the very essence of being.
Whilst making the pieces, I am often in the dark as to their intrinsic meaning. I guess just as a mother doesn't know how her new born will look, or indeed behave whilst the baby is still a foetus in her womb; with each breath that she takes her foetus is developing and evolving. This too is true for these sculptures. It is only once the piece is complete and lives that the full meaning maybe revealed.
The texture of the sculpture will show the speed at which the piece was created. A rough, sketchy and highly textured piece will have been modelled in clay very quickly. Generally the piece will be realised within a few short hours. These particular sculptures often depict pain, lust, passion, frustration, anger or any other raw emotion which requires a swift execution in order to encapsulate these powerful yet difficult feelings.
The smoother pieces take much more time to create, usually a month or more. These sculptures generally depict a very different array of emotions, physiological states or political statements, as you will see in the pieces 'Silent Circle' and 'Dignified'.
Though often uncomfortable,it is crucial that I enter into and remain in the physiological state that the piece is attempting to communicate. I refuse to replicate or contrive the emotion as this would communicate something very different in the pieces. These true, raw, honest emotions infuse the piece with an energy which will hopefully communicate with you.
When considering these pieces I encourage the observer to use their own interpretation, and see these works not as representations of my unique personal journey through life, but something that we can all relate to in one way or another. I'm sure that depending on your own life story you will experience a different series of emotional responses from the next person.
I hope that as our life experience grows so too does our understanding of the sculptures and their depth of meaning.
